Cannock Chase Council marked the start of Armed Forces Week on Monday with a flag-raising ceremony outside the Civic Suite. Chair Councillor Andrea Muckley and Reverend Stephen Reynolds from St. Luke's led the tribute to honour the dedication and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community.

The flag was raised by Councillor John Parkes, a veteran who has spent years supporting fellow service personnel. Parkes experienced homelessness after leaving the Armed Forces but went on to compete in the Invictus Games for Team GB. He now works as an ambassador for Blesma, the Royal British Legion, and Help for Heroes.

Through his work in Cannock and beyond, Parkes helps veterans tackle both physical and mental health challenges. "This week means a great deal to me," he said. "I've seen first-hand the importance of the support these charities provide."

Armed Forces Day falls on Saturday 27 June, marking the end of Armed Forces Week. The national occasion honours serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and their families. For Cannock residents, the week serves as an important reminder of the local community's connection to the Armed Forces and the ongoing support needed for those who have served.
