Staffordshire County Council highways crews have completed emergency repairs to two major A-roads following separate vehicle fires in the Cannock area within four days in mid-September.
The first fire occurred on the A460 Cannock Road in Featherstone on Thursday, 10 September. The HGV fire caused a full road closure. Highways crews managed diversions while the vehicle remains were removed and the road surface cleaned. Repair crews arrived early Friday morning to plane out the damaged carriageway. The road reopened ahead of Friday evening rush hour.
Four days later, a second HGV fire broke out on the A34 Cannock Road in Bednall in the early hours of 14 September. Crews attended to manage the closure and assess damage. Once the vehicle was removed, contractors began work in the early evening to plane and resurface the damaged section. The road was relined and reopened the same evening.
Council response
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said: "Having two large vehicle fires in such a short space of time is unprecedented, and I'm relieved to hear no one was hurt in either incident."
He added that closing a major A-road causes disruption, but the priority in both cases was reopening safely. "Crews worked incredibly hard to get these roads planed, resurfaced and open as soon as it was safe to do so. I want to thank them for their hard work, and everyone else for their patience while they worked to get these routes open again."
