More than 350 residents in Cannock Chase have successfully claimed benefits they were entitled to, thanks to a government-funded support programme. Delivered by Citizens Advice Staffordshire South West, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund scheme has now closed after helping households navigate applications, appeals and tribunal processes. By February, residents had secured a combined £1,049,570 in successful claims and appeals.

The scheme proved essential during the cost of living crisis, offering vital support to vulnerable people across Cannock. This included residents who were out of work, in low-paid jobs, or living with health conditions. The support extended beyond simple advice—the programme guided people through complex benefit application procedures and represented them in appeals when claims were initially rejected.

Results from the initiative demonstrate its real-world impact on Cannock residents' lives. A total of 217 people reported improved personal or financial circumstances after accessing the scheme. Additionally, 90 residents improved their engagement with local services overall, suggesting the programme helped people access broader support networks available to them.

Councillor Garry Samuels, Portfolio Leader for Regeneration and High Streets, acknowledged the scheme's importance. "This programme has made a real and lasting difference for hundreds of people across Cannock Chase," he said. "At a time when many families are facing increased financial pressures, helping residents access the benefits they are entitled to is absolutely vital."

Cannock Chase Council remains committed to supporting vulnerable residents, even as this particular scheme concludes. The council is working to ensure struggling families continue accessing the help they need to navigate the benefits system and improve their financial circumstances.
